Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Headquarters Kure District Building No.1 (Imperial Navy Kure Regional Headquarters Building)

Kure Spot of Interest

Many red-brick-covered buildings still remain today at the compound of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Headquarters Kure District. Most of them were constructed between 1890 and 1920.
Among them, the Imperial Navy Kure Regional Headquarters Building which was completed in 1907 is representative of red-brick buildings still existing in Kure. It has one basement floor and two floors above ground and boasts a perfect harmony of bricks and granite stones. The carefully designed and elaborately finished building looks solemn and elegant. We can see English style brick stacking on the outer wall. The second floor has stone columns with cherry patterns engraved on their capitals. The dome-shaped roof, damaged by the air bombings, was restored in 1999, and today it is one of the landmarks of Kure.
