Shimo-Kamagari Island – Walking on the Cobblestones of Sannose
Sannose, the old port town on Shimo-Kamagari Island, is famous for being an important stopover point for Korean emissaries and their entourage when they travelled to the Japanese capital during the Edo period.
Today, the area has several cultural attractions such as the Shotoen Museum with its collection of historical documents registered as a UNESCO Memory of the World. You can also visit the Rantokaku Art Museum made entirely of Japanese cedar and the Hakusetsuro – a traditional Japanese teahouse made of cherry wood that has been designated as a tangible cultural property of Kure City.
Cobblestone streets run the entire length of Sannose, creating a garden-like atmosphere. Take time and walk the streets of Sannose and immerse yourself in Japanese culture.
