In Kure, a “stand” refers to a bar. After the war, Kure was a center of operations for the British Commonwealth Occupation Force and western style standing bars began to pop up in the city to accommodate the servicemen. These bars are still referred to as “stand” bars and you can find plenty on Nakadori Road running through the center of Kure. Nakadori is a mere 15-minute walk from JR Kure Station and its bars are open late into the night. Head to a stand bar if you seek a truly authentic Kure experience. In the bars you can sing karaoke, enjoy refreshing drinks and chat with the locals.
