Yurugi Rock

Kumano Spot of Interest

Yurugi Rock is an impressive rock formation in Kumano Town created entirely by natural forces. The huge boulders sit one on top of the other in perfect balance, moving ever so slightly if pushed. According to legend, only people with pure hearts can make the giant stone move.

Yurugi Rock has never collapsed during earthquakes or natural disasters and this resilience has turned the rock into a symbol for good luck. This is especially true for students preparing for entrance examinations and many can be seen visiting and praying at the rock before exams. The area around Yurugi Rock, including the stone Buddha and the Kannon Hall, is designated as a cultural asset of Kumano Town.
