“Navy Gourmet” Healthy Dishes for Surviving Long Voyages
The search for healthy dishes was the start of “Navy gourmet.” In order to prevent sickness and disease during long voyages, a great deal of research was conducted, including the adoption of Western cuisine. In addition, as eating was one of the few pleasures inside a battleship, a process of trial and error was repeated to provide delicious meals, leading to the creation of “Navy gourmet” dishes. Kure, a city closely connected to the former Japanese Navy, is now working to revive dishes based on cookbooks from the Meiji Navy and recipes from Showa navy ships. Try these dishes and feel the atmosphere from those days.
